海老沢嗣郎は, 1907年から1956年までに得られた各国の観測者達の眼視観測や写真観測および海老沢自身の眼視観測を総合的に整理し, 精密な火星図を作製した. この海老沢火星図は縦約40センチ, 横約20センチの画用紙3枚に書かれており, 従来の模様名に加えて海老沢が考案した模様名も記録されている. 海老沢火星図は, 当時最も精密な火星図のひとつとして世界中の火星観測者に使用され, 国際的に高く評価された. Shiro Ebisawa created detailed maps of Mars by organizing the results of visible and photo observations obtained between 1907 to 1956 by observers in various nations, and results of visible observations by himself. The maps are drawn on three drawing papers; each one is about 40 centimeters by 20 centimeters. They contain conventional names and names that were originated by Ebisawa besides. Ebisawa Maps were used by observers of Mars around the world as one of the most detailed maps of Mars, and were appreciated internationally.
小森長生による火星地理の整理(「火星の地質学(2)」地質調査所編『地質ニュース』[No.222, 1973年2月号]所収)から, この火星図でも使用されている地名(模様名)を構成する語をあげておく. [暗色模様(南半球に多い)] 海(Mare), 湖(Lacus), 森(Lucus), 泉(Fons), 沼(Palus), 湾(Sinus), 港(Portus), 海峡(Fretum), 斑点(Nodus), 三叉路(Trivium), 凹地(Depressio). [明るく輝いて見える部分(北半球に多い)] 地方(Regio), 岬(Promontorium), 大陸(Continens), 山(Mons), 雪原(Nix), 島(Insula), 橋(Pons). [運河(Canalis)(北半球に多い)] これにギリシア神話やローマ神話に出てくる地名・人名・神名が用いられている.

伝記／歴史
海老沢嗣郎氏の天文学に関する業績は, 関係資料の出版物の項を参照されたい. 『アサヒグラフ』10月3日号(1951年)の記事「星研究家」では, つぎのように紹介されている. -木星-海老沢嗣郎氏(21) 東京都下田無に生れ 東京歯科医専卆 昨年より歯科医を嗣ぐ 野尻抱影氏の著書に影響され 小学生の時「プラネタリュウム」を見て 「大空に仄かな憧れを抱き」中学に入つて 器械や書物に親しんだが 戦争中のこととて意の如くならず 戦後 村山定男氏に師事 「惑星の表面にあらわれた美にひかれ」木星の観測を始めた 本業に追われて暇がないが 天文では生計をたてることはできないから 「やはりアマチュアとして暇をみてやるより外ない」 しかし系統的観測の野心をもち 写真観測 理論的勉強等「将来の夢は大きく」 去年から計画をたてた観測室の設計も今春には着手 殆ど完成した 天文学はあくまで数学に基いた理論的なものだが 「芸術と科学との結びつき」に魅力があり その点文学的に解釈して 「底にある深遠さを見つめた野尻さんに共感している」 この記事によれば, 歯科医をつとめながら, 和名「冥王星」提案や星の和名の研究で有名な野尻抱影, 国立科学博物館員・天文博物館五島プラネタリウム館長だった村山定男氏に影響を受け, 天文学に入っていった. はじめ火星の観測をしていたわけではないようにもみえるが, 5年後までには『天界』誌の論文から火星に関心をもって研究を進めていることがわかる. 後に所属として「惑星物理学研究所」を使用することがあった. なお, 1968年・1969年の『日本補綴歯科學會雜誌』や, 1992年の『日本口腔診断学会雑誌』に歯科学関係の研究も発表している(下顎運動と咬合器に関する見解, 関連の基礎的臨床的研究等).

保管履歴
2008年2月に, 京都大学大学院理学研究科附属花山天文台図書室に保管されていることが確認される. 2008年7月に, 京都大学総合博物館2008年企画展「京の宇宙学」にて展示され, しばらく総合博物館で預かり書誌的情報が把握された. Contributions from the Institute of Astrophysics and Kwasan Observatory, University of Kyoto 誌へ投稿した原稿の一部として保管されていたものと推測される.
