「ビニロン」は, 国内技術で初めて作られたポリビニルアルコール(PVA)を主体とする世界で2番目, 日本では最初の合成繊維で, 櫻田一郎教授(当時工学部, 化学研究所兼任)らにより1939年に発明された. 京都大学化学研究所の伝える「羊毛様合成一号製造工場計画書」と「ビニロン紡糸実験装置」は, 2012年に公益社団法人日本化学会より「化学遺産」に認定された.
